INSTRUCTION Beginning students learn the proper stance, drumming techniques, and some basic taiko pieces. Advanced students are taught longer, more complex pieces that include playing on the smaller shime drums and the larger odaiko drum, and playing pieces in rounds. Classes begin with a period of stretching and warming up called taiso. Taiko requires some physical effort, so it is important that students participate in taiso. Beginners should inform the instructor of any physical limitations or injuries that limit their flexibility or participation.
The cost of each three-month term for the 2008 calendar year is $80 per student. Bachi (taiko drumsticks) can be purchased for $17 and ear protection for $1. WHAT TO BRING TO CLASS
